Ripon College’s volleyball setter Abbi Williamson is coming into her senior year already in possession of the school record for most career assists after only three seasons as a Red Hawk.
“Throughout all of last season when I was accomplishing the things that I did, my teammates were the best part about every accomplishment.” Abbi said, “When I broke the school record, they had signs on the sideline counting down the amount of assists that I needed. And when it was announced that I was conference player of the year, they cheered so loud that the fans in the gym couldn’t hear what the announcer was saying, so even my family had no idea I had won that until I went to tell them. They were extremely supportive the entire season and I would not have been able to accomplish any of the things I did without them, and I will never be able to thank them enough for that.”
The senior sports management major from Naperville, Ill., answered a few questions about herself to help the campus get to know one of the key components to this year’s volleyball team.
Q: What is your favorite memory in your volleyball career?
A: Every year in high school, our volleyball program ran a “Volley For The Cure” event where we raised money for breast cancer awareness, and my junior year we raised $52,000. This was special to me because my mom had passed away from breast cancer the year before that.
Q: What is your favorite thing to do off the court?
A: I like being active and playing a lot of other sports besides volleyball, but my favorite one to play is soccer.
Q: If you could go back in time, what is something you would tell yourself the first day you walked on campus?
A: Get involved more right away. I was pretty shy freshman year and I did not really take many opportunities to hang out with people or have fun, and now I realized how much I missed out on.
Q: What are you most looking forward to about senior year?
A: Enjoying as much free time I have with friends and making senior year one to remember.
Q: What are your plans for after graduation?
A: I am hoping to get a job in the operations department of a professional sports team. Hopefully it is with a professional women’s soccer team.
Q: What is your favorite team to play and why?
St. Norbert because it is always a great competition. Every time we play them we know that we have to battle with them for every point and those matches are always the most exciting.
Q: What’s one thing students on campus might not know about you?
A: I have a lot of siblings, five brothers and 3 sisters.
Q: What’s your favorite meal in the commons?
A: Mac and cheese.
